ODCA Convention 2003 - Past President Michael O'Connor

The 2003 Oregon Dry Cleaners Convention was held October 17 - 19 in Canyonville, Oregon, at the Seven Feathers Casino and Resort. The theme of this years convention was "Alternative Solvents and Technologies". Several speakers were on hand Saturday to discuss they're expertise in this field.

Joe Bays from Seattle, Washington teamed up with Bob Blackburn from Northern California to talk about Rynex. Dr. David C Miller came from Eugene, Or to speak of Hydrocarbons, and more specifically Eco Solv. Don Dallons made the trip up from Anaheim, California to talk about Green Earth cleaning. And Stephen P. Risotto came all the way from Washington D.C to speak of our old friend Perchloroethylene. Tom Tipps from Bowe Permac then summarized the days events by discussing the day to day issues with each of the solvents.

If any drycleaner in the state was getting ready to purchase a new machine and was on the fence about which solvent to go with, this was the place to find the answers. All speakers did a nice job of selling the positives of their subjects while not backing down or evading the tough questions. The speakers were available at lunch on Saturday as well as the dinner Saturday evening to answer follow up questions. Also appearing Saturday afternoon was Dick DeZeeuw from DEQ to discuss the new Dry Cleaner bill that is scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2004.

New to the ODCA Convention this year was the vendor display area where various companies were able to show their products on table top displays. The reception on Friday evening and the two hour lunch on Saturday were held in the same room so attendees could eat and mingle with the vendors to see what they had to offer. Those vendors present this year were: DPECO - (Equipment, Repair) Martin Peterson Fabricare Equipment - (Equipment and Supplies) Earl and Laurie Eckstrom Westport Supply - (Supplies) Alex Johnson, Shane Streets - (Supplies) Steve Carrow Prestige Point of Sale - (DC Software) Kishore Patel, Sinel Patel Daijasoft - (DC Software) Ali Khan Imagine Cleaners Online - (Clean Suite Software/POS, and Web Design for Cleaners) Leslie Kettenhofen ODCA - Early 2004 registration, mugs, hats, lunch boxes etc. A big thanks goes to all of the vendors and their efforts as they did a great job of showcasing their products and services.

    ODCA Convention Continued
The awards banquet was held on Saturday evening complete with table top and door prizes. The theme of this years prizes was practicality, and more specifically tools (much to the dismay of certain female attendees). The thought was you can always use extra tools around a Dry Cleaning plant and this would be something everyone could use. If this sounds like I am defending these gifts because I picked them out, your right - I am and I did. The grand prize winners this year were Dennis and Marlys Peterson, newly elected directors of District 5. They won the Mondo Huge Tool Set that was the envy of all attendees.

Also presented Saturday evening was the Dry Cleaner of the Year in the form of the Tom Moser award. Tom Moser was the President of the ODCA in 1966 when he passed away while serving his term. To honor his dedication to the industry, the ODCA annually presents the Tom Moser award. This award recognizes the Outstanding Dry Cleaner of the Year. The criteria for this honor includes participation in the association, the dry cleaning industry, and his or her community.

This years winner exhibited prominence in all of these areas. She is part of an annual coat drive that is now in its 9th consecutive year. During this drive they serve as a drop point for the coats as they clean, press, and do minor repairs to roughly 100 to 150 coats a year. These coats are for both adults and kids and they are handed out by the Volunteer Fire Dept during the 2nd week of Dec along with Food baskets fro the needy residents in the local area.

The contributions to the Oregon Dry Cleaners Association have been enormous. She literally brought the ODCA out of the dark ages technology wise, and moved us to the fore front with one of the best web pages around. She built, designed, and provides upkeep to the ODCA website. She also provides sites to all of our members of our organization. Along with the technology input, she has served on the board as a Director, and has taken on a huge role on the convention and education committees. She has helped organize several seminars, as well as scheduled, and was the contact person for all of the speakers and vendors that joined us at the convention. The 2003 winner of the Tom Moser Award - Leslie Kettenhofen.

    ODCA Convention Continued
Sunday at the convention brought us the new Officers and Board Members for 2004. I am proud to present the following:

OFFICERS 2004 President - Tammy Thompson President Elect - Kathey Butters Treasurer - Dan Bittick Secretary - Jodi Bittick Sgt at Arms - Brian Olson

BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2004 District 1, Position 1 - Charles Petry District 1, Position 2 - Scott McClure District 2 - Karen Shinabery District 3 - Leslie Kettenhofen District 4 - Claire Anchick District 5 - Marlys and Dennis Peterson

A big thanks to all of the above and to all who served in 2003. Legislation on the Dry Cleaning Bill was a big issue in 2003, and the legislative committee consisting of Gary Campbell, Kathey Butters, and Steve Young put in an enormous amount of time and effort to give the Dry Cleaners in this state a voice. The 2002 President Brian Olson was very instrumental with his guidance, insight, and just the patience to answer stupid questions from the current President throughout the year.

    ODCA Convention Continued
The convention committee of Leslie, Claire, and Brian showed their skills during this weekend as the convention seemed to flow seamlessly. Not an easy task.

Now we have 2004 upon us and we have a few new members on the board (Charles, Scott, Claire, Marlys and Dennis) to join Leslie and Karen. We also have new officers with Kathey Butters taking the Pres Elect position, Dan Bittick as Treasurer, Jodi Bittick will take on the Secretary role, Brian Olson is the Sgt At Arms, and Tammy Thompson will lead us as President in 2004.

During this upcoming year we must continue to strive to stay united as dry cleaners. Each cleaner is different and has different goals and objectives, but we must find common ground to unite on. A fragmented industry will have absolutely no voice against upcoming rules, regulations, fees, and laws. Its not going to get better people, and if you don't like the way things are going - then get involved and help to do something about it. But lets do something as Dry Cleaners, regardless of size of store, geographic location, solvent choice, age, race, or price point. We are all Dry Cleaners, and this industry has a very large bulls eye on its back. As one we have a chance, split apart we are toast. Make the call!

    Message from President Tammy Thompson
These are challenging times for dry cleaners in Oregon and throughout the nation. Again this past year, ODCA's legislative committee spent hours addressing and rewriting the Oregon Dry Cleaner Law for the benefit of all Oregon dry cleaners. Although substantial resources were allocated to protecting our interests in the legislature, ODCA still provided educational opportunities to assist us in operating our businesses professionally and successfully. .

There is no better time to become active in your ODCA! The Board truly wants your input and guidance in making this organization what Oregon dry cleaners want it to be. The education and convention committees are at work planning this year's seminars and convention. This year being a "non-legislative" year, we're planning to allocate more resources towards education. If you have suggestions or ideas, simply e-mail or phone one of the officers or directors. We truly look forward to and appreciate your comments!
