  • Greetings!

This month I'd like to remind everyone to check the "Members Only" section of the website, we have been adding lots of new information there. We've recently added the Logs Needed for your Boiler and the DEQ Factsheets on disposing of Flourescent Lightbulbs and Batteries. There's also a members forum where you can discuss ideas, ask questions and network with your fellow drycleaners. If you don't remember the username and password to access the members only page, drop me an email.

We're also in need of members who'd like to share something about their stores and themselves. If you'd like to be a member profile, let me know and I'll send you the questionnaire. Also remember to check out and use the Classifieds on the site. If you send the Classified to me as well I'll post it in the newsletter. I would also like to receive news snippets, opening a new store? Win an Award? Get a write up in your local newspaper? Share it!

I'd also like some additional articles for the newsletter. If you like to write, take some time and submit an article.

OSHA Hazard Communication Rule - Kathey Butters, President

Are you familiar with the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) Hazard Communication Rule? The people who attended the seminar sponsored by ODCA on May 14th are, and received the materials & knowledge that will make them in compliance not only with OAR 437, Division 2, Subdivision Z, 1910.1200 but the DEQ requirement in regards to updated MSDS notebooks.

The seminar provided the necessary materials & answered the questions - how to inventory your chemicals and what to do with that inventory, how often you need to check for updated MSDS sheets, how to document that you have the latest MSDS sheets, read & understand the MSDS sheets, What do you do with the old MSDS sheets of products you no longer use, how to train your employees and document that training, how to create a acceptable label if not in the original container, and how to write a written program to cover all 8 required areas.

We hope to have the information and some of the handouts available in the "members only" section of the website in a couple of weeks for those ODCA members who were unable to attend.

YOU CAN NO LONGER KEEP YOUR HEAD IN THE SAND!! - President Kathey Butters

It is time to step up and run your business like a business. You owe it to yourself, your family, your community and the industry.

Some Oregon Dry Cleaners seem to believe that if you ignore rules & regulations they will disappear or at least it would be a viable defense if your plant is ever inspected. GUESS WHAT? It isn't a viable defense. Whether you agree with all the requirements of the state and federal agencies, you can not choose which ones you are going to implement. It is your job as a business operating in Oregon to be in compliance with all of them, and it is one of the jobs of ODCA to do the best we can in providing the information that will help you comply. ODCA is fulfilling that job, now it is your turn to step up and do your part.

The Oregon Dry Cleaning industry does not have the best reputation when it comes to stepping up and doing what we need to do. Instead we come kicking & screaming all the way or we come halfway or not at all. We will only be able to change the industry reputation from within, so instead of pleading ignorance let's, as an industry, become a leader in complying in all areas of our businesses.

Let your community and customers know that you are keeping current not only with the latest technology for processing their clothing and household items but that you are also up-to-date with regulations and incompliance with all state and federal rules, that your facility not only cares about their clothing but their community.

When was the last time you spoke at a local service organization or business leads group explaining what the process of "dry cleaning" is all about? How we are regulated and educated to better serve our community and our customers.

For the past several years ODCA has been offering numerous workshops and lectures to help you stay current with the latest technology and incompliance. Next time you receive a flyer about our latest workshop or classes make plans to attend.

The Oregon Dry Cleaners Association is available to help you stay in compliance and help you update your skills.
